Sunday 9th August

Bill

Awake about 5 then temperature taken. Had a wash and shave. Breakfast porridge, bacon on fried bread, marmalade, then read book A Passage to India. Had a cig. Bed made and read the paper. It is a lovely day. It would have been grand at home. Had a bath and then ** and orderly dressed my place. I had dinner, meat, peas, potatoes, stewed plums, custard. After dinner I read some more of my book, and then Kidlet came. It was nice to see her and she brought me my ** some cream. It was OK. We put jig saw together and then tea. They gave Doris a cup and I had bread, butter, jam and cream cake and bun. I gave Doris my piece of chocolate. Poor old Kidlet, it's lonely for her and it rained when she came so she got a bit wet. I had a nice time with her and she went off after tea. I had a read and a wash. Played cards for a while. It seemed very empty. Had supper,, lemonade, bread and cheese. I read a little more and smoked a little. Went to sleep.

Doris

Up 8.30, clocks went back  last night so it was 9.30, lovely lie in! Washed up and did potatoes, washed Lyn's things, then wrote home and to Lyn, then messed about. Had a scrap dinner  and dressed and set off for Yatesbury 1.15. Arrived 2.10 and stayed 'til 4.35. Nice time, talked and did a jig saw. Felt ever so much happier today. Cycled back 5.15, had to get all the tea ready - bitch. Washed up, cleared up etc, ironed Lyn's things, rang up home, Lyn is quite happy. Took Kala loose over the fields. She was very good. Messed about a bit and now to bed 9.05 pm so G. Night.

Saturday 8th August

Bill

Awake at 5, had my bed made then temperature. Had a wash, shave and breakfast, cornflakes, beans in tomato sauce, marmalade. Read magazine, had a bath then dressing done. Read paper from cover to cover. Matron cane round. It has been raining all the morning. I hope it will keep fine for Kidlet. I wonder how Lyn is today. 12.10 dinner, cold bacon, beetroot, tomato, onion, lettuce, potato, sultana pudding, custard. Not a bad dinner. ** the orderly came back and had gone on embarkation leave. I read again after dinner then the nurse and orderly came round doing the op patients. I listened to the banter. ** Grant came round. He asked me if it was easier, I said very much so. We had tea, fish paste and I had an egg boiled that Doris brought me, and cake. I continued to read Grey Wolf. I had a rest then Doris came. She brought me a jig saw puzzle and some butter. It was nice to see her again. Lyn went away quite cheerful and Dad rang up last night. Doris got the bike, she was tired, also my wallet. She had to leave at half past seven. I had meat pie for supper and cocoa. I played patience, beaten by two cards. I packed up to go to bed or at least I was in bed. Had a bar of chocolate that I bought today.

Doris

Up usual  time and all usual jobs, but oh I do miss Lynette. Finished about 2, got the tea then laid on the bed 'till 2.40. Got ready.Went to the top of the drive, went to the Flying School with Channings, got my bike, lamps, pump, wallet and cakes from Bill's locker. Got back 4.45, cut breads, gobbled some tea, and set off to see Bill at 5.30. Got there about 6.15 but the Sister turned me out at 7, it did seem a short time with him. I do hope she won't stop me going in the evenings.I walked most of the way home, got back 8.30, and all the washing up etc to do, no help at all. Bed now, very tired, lonely miserable. 99.30 so G. Night.

Friday 7th August

Bill

5.30 had bed made, 6.30 temperature taken. Breakfast 7.30, had cornflakes, sausages but I did not eat my sausages and had one of my eggs boiled. Read book, had a bath and dressing done. Tidied up locker. It was raining hard. Had dinner, meat, greens, potatoes, jam pudding, custard. Attenwell went in for his op making six today. I studied Elements of Agriculture  in all its branches. Had tea, bread, butter, jam, two pieces of cake, then read again. Doris came on the pouring rain. She gave me a tomato that Mrs Smeaton sent. Lyn went with Ivy today. I hope she will be OK. Doris showed me two games of patience. She played several. I had supper, corned beef, beetroot and some jelly. I also ate some of tomatoes. It was nice to see her. She rang up *.O. and ** Harris told her to call in hut 5 and they would show her what  he wanted to get. Doris left about 5 past 8. It has stopped raining now. Had a game pf patience then read a little more. Leg ached a bit 'till 12.00.

Doris

Rodwell. An exceedingly miserable day. Lynette went to Barnet with Ivy at 9.45 am. She was ever so happy to go but it's HELL without her, it's so dreadfully lonely. All usual jobs. Finished about 2.45 then laid on the bed till 4, got tea and had a bit myself. Then got ready and about 5.15 set off for Bill. He seemed quite keen for me to go tonight which has made me very miserable. I wonder if it would be better not to go tomorrow but I do want to  see him. Left at 8.10 approx, back 8.50. Did the dining room and now to bed. Mrs S. is a perfect lady dog today, I do hate her. 9.24 pm so G. Night.

Thursday 6th August

Bill

Had my bed made about 5.30, then got down to another nap. Then 6.15 had a wash and shave by the bowl near my bed. I had breakfast, porridge bacon, marmalade. I read my book and waited 'till the papers came. I read the paper and had my bath. Replaced my dressing, the sister came and put it on. Then I went on reading. I had dinner and it was corned meat, lettuce, beetroot, potatoes and fig pudding. After dinner I had a read and a short sleep. It is lovely outside and bright. Gosh, I wish I was home with Kidlet. I have been thinking about her cycling over yesterday without brakes. It has made me turn over several times since. I am glad she isn't riding it any more. One of the patients leaves tomorrow. His wife and child visited him today. A few more patients came in. Had tea, jam, lettuce. Read some more. Then Doris came. I was very pleased. We talked and she said Lyn goes back tomorrow with Ivy. I do hope she will be ok. I enjoyed every minute she was here. We played Stop and she brought me the book. I also bought 2 oz tobacco. Then Kidlet went and I finished my book. I was sorry when she went but it couldn't be helped as we have to be ** as **  **. I had my bed tidied up. Legs ached and a bit warm.

Doris

Rodwell. Up usual time and all usual jobs. Car at 12 to Calne to fetch Ivy, talk, talk and ironed. Got Lyn up, had a scratched tea and cycled off to Bill. Got there 6.10 and stayed 'till 7.30. Talked and played Stop. Got back 8.30, walked around the garden and then took Kala down the fields, let her loose, supper and now to bed. Ivy has a camp bed in my room and we've got the giggles! Bill was perhaps a little bit better but certainly no worse. He was pleased to see me. I shall get my own bike tomorrow I hope. 11.10 so G. Night.

Wednesday 5th August

Bill

1.30 to 3.15 I was still awake, dreaming and half asleep later.Woke up with a bad head. Orderly Woof took my temperature. I tried to sleep again. Got up about 6.50 to wash and shave. Had breakfast cereals, tea, pepper marmalade. Put my things away and then finished my book. Had a bit of a head ache and then had a bath and my dressing. Had dinner and had meat, stewed cabbage, potatoes, two helpings of stewed fruit and rice. Read paper after dinner. I had a sleep after orderly told me Doris was coming. I was very pleased when Doris woke me up. She  came on Mr Smeaton's bike. I was very pleased to see her and she gave me one two-ounce of tobacco and two tomatoes that Mr Smeaton sent and some eggs, and chocolate. It was good to jaw again and she left at four o'clock. I was sorry she had to go so soon. I gave her the key to my box and cycle so she could get the bike. I had tomatoes for tea, jam, paste. Had a yarn with one of the fellows then read some more. Gave a chap a piece of my chocolate, had a piece myself then tried a pipe of tobacco.Had some lemonade and piece of cake. 8.30 had my supper, liver, bacon, tomato. I read and smoked and then got down to sleep.

Doris

Rodwell. Up 6.30 as I couldn't sleep but had an awful dream about Bill. Took Kala loose over the fields. All usual jobs. Rang the hospital 11.45, had a rushed dinner alone, set off 1.25 and got there 2.30. Bill was pleased to see me. He will be there at least a week and they might have to cut it if it doesn't go down. Sister was very nice, I can go anytime. Letter from Bill too today. Back at 5.10, tea was ready! Cleared up, washed up etc. .Put Lyn to bed. She  was very good while I was out. Phoned Ivy and she is coming tomorrow morning to take Lyn back and I shall miss her but I must see Bill. Thoroughly tired out and miserable. Now 9.50 pm. G. Night.






Tuesday 4th August

Bill

Awake at 3 am till about 5. My place irritated a bit, then half past six the sister came and made beds. I went and washed, shaved at 6.40 and got back into bed. Had a nap then breakfast, cereals, bacon and marmalade. I tidied up my locker and put things away on my shelf. My bed was made again and ready for the inspection. The inspection over, I had a bath. L.A.C. Attenwell  came in to have an operation so we are well represented. I bought a Daily Telegraph, read that and had dinner, boiled beef, greens, potatoes and date pudding and custard.. After dinner i had a talk on guns with the Sergeant of air bourne troops. Then Attenwell sat on my bed till he went to have a bath. Read in the afternoon and had one eye on the corridor in case Doris should appear. Had tea, bread butter jam and a hot cake and a real nice cup of tea. After tea, more reading and still one eye on the corridor. Had my place shaved and the stuff cleaned off and then bandage on. Read the story Death Greets a Guest. I wrote a short note to Doris and had supper, mixed mash of cheese and potatoes, coffee. I read till it was dark then tried to get to sleep.

Doris

Rodwell. Up usual time and all usual jobs. Finished about 2.30. Lyn asleep so as Bill again did not ring up so watched for him to come 'till 3.45 then rang the B.F.S. He went to hospital yesterday. Rang Yatesbury Hospital but only told he was feeling all right with a lump on his leg! Unless I hear anything contrary from Bill tomorrow I shall go over tomorrow and see him. Took Lyn to the shop, got tobacco and sweets. Came back via Whitcombe for a walk. Washed Bill's clothes and now to bed, very restless 9.05 pm so G. Night.

Monday 3rd August

Bill

Up at 6.50, went over to dining hall with Ron Ford.  Came back, washed, shaved. My groin wasn't paining me quite so much. I went to breakfast but without appetite.. It was porridge and sausages but I could  barely stuff those down. I went to MI centre and the MO examined me. He told me to get my  pack and I should go over the hospital with him. Also with Yates and Doug Bloomfield and got our blue kit. I had to go to bed and have a bath and dressing put on. I had dinner, stew meat, peas, potatoes, currant pudding, custard. I read the papers. I wrote a letter to Doris and Mother and then the library came round. I chose two books and they gave me two others. I read, had tea, fish paste, biscuits, then did more reading, The Man in the Dark. Had supper, salmon and lettuce then read again plus Feels paper, Had supper, been a lot later I might have eaten more. I had my pipe going. Listened to the radio. Saw some of the lads knocking down the wall. What a day for August Bank Holiday. I hope next years will be with Kidlet and Lyn in our own little home. I hope it wont be long before I am out again I came in all told. I settled down to sleep and the breeze was cooling.

Doris

Rodwell. Up usual time and all usual jobs. Finished about 2.30, Lyn asleep, did a big packet of washing, hung it out. Messed about a bit, got Lyn up 4, got tea and 5 we had ours, then went to meet Bill - who didn't come, and then went to see the kid and fed her. Washed up etc, then put Lyn to bed. . I feel very  worried about Bill today as I haven't  heard anything from him at all  and he was going to the M.O. this morning. I read this evening but was listening the whole time for him to ring.  I  do feel worried about him and hope he is all right. Fed Bill Cook's rabbits  as he's  away til Thursday and now to dded - still listening 9.32. G. Night




Sunday 2nd August

Bill

Woke up early. It was raining. I got up and closed the window as I could feel the rain coming in. I got up at 8.30, went to breakfast. I had cornflakes, fried eggs on fried bread. I had a wash, shave and a hair cut and then helped to clean up dining hall. Came back to hut and sat on my bed writing up this diary. It is still raining hard, what a change. I hope it wont knock Mr Smeaton's corn down. What a height it is, some of its 6-8 at the least. I read two newspapers through then went to dinner. Meat, greens and potatoes, bread pudding, custard. I went and had a lie down on the bed then I got dressed and went out taking my side bag with washing. I could not ride as it was too painful. I walked along the track and in some places it was very rough going with cow parsnips as high as myself. I struck the round that leads to highway, then walked down the drive. Doris came out. She had been as far as Compton Basset and back again. We went upstairs to get Lyn up and then we had tea. After tea we went down to the kid.Gave it some green stuff and walked back again. Put Lyn to bed, read her the Three Little Pigs and said goodnight. I read with Doris the Elements of Agriculture and looked it through. After then we had supper early. 19.20 I walked back. Doris walked as far as the road and track. I took a shortcut over the meadows and back by 10.25.

Doris

Rodwell. Up 8.30, Lyn dressed herself. Washed up,did potatoes then wrote home more or less all morning, and read Farming! All helped so finished by 2.30. Lyn asleep so walked up to meet Bill, didn't come, came back and he came, he walked as his seat was too swollen and sore to cycle. It looked rotten and hot and red. Messed about till tea time, cleared up etc, then took Lyn to see the kid and fed it. Put Lyn to bed and 3 Pigs, then sat in the chair together all the evening and read farming. We would like Todd's Farm, Saxted. I got supper done, and then walked part of the way up the Highway with Bill, now to bed 10.10 pm so G. Night.

Saturday 1st August

Bill

Up at 6.50, outside on parade. I went over to the dining hall, cleaned up. Came back 7.10 and had a wash and shave. Cleaned up and went to breakfast. Had porridge, liver and bacon, coffee. Went back to hut. On parade in our collars and shirt sleeves. Dismissed, I went to dining hall and cleaned up. Rambolt helped me so I was done by 10.15.  Charlie Woodford went on leave. It is a lovely morning, real summer weather. The lads are taking their test for A.C.I. on the rifle. 10.30 break. 11 am I cleaned up rec room and sat in the arm chair till twelve., then I went to dinner. Cold beef, potatoes and greens, and prunes and custard. I had a lie down on the bed then I went and swept up dining hall and came back and layed on the bed  with a book which I finished.. All the lads had to work on the roof of the officers mess which did not please them. I had a good rest. It is glorious weather. I went over for a cup of tea and they had haddock cake. I got dressed and departed. I met Doris. She had been early and had got a picnic tea ready for us. We went down the fields and sat in the hunting ground under an oak tree. It was lovely and warm, a bit thundery. We had tea, jam sandwiches and tomatoes, buns that Doris made and some biscuits and dough cake. A nice feast of tea. I enjoyed it very much. Lyn was full of beans. We read about the farm at Saxsted and wished we could have it. I read to Lyn, and my book Ace High. We talked and then packed up. We cleared away and I put Lyn to bed. I read her some nursery rhymes then we sat in the chair. I changed my clothes and had supper.

Doris

Rodwell. Up usual time and all usual jobs. Letter from Mother and farm near Framlingham -ideal if only it waspossible. Finished 2.30, Lyn asleep, made some cakes for Bill,packed a picnic tea for us, got tea, got Lyn up 4.15. (I did some ironing first) and went up to the top, met Bill, went down the fields and had a lovely picnic. Back 7.45, put Lyn to bed (Bill did), washed up etc, sat in the chair and read together, then went upstairs awhile; supper together then up to the top and now to bed 10.17 pm so G.Night.







Friday 31st July

Bill

Up at 6.45, made bed and went on parade. Went over to dining hall with Ron Ford for ten minutes. We swept table and floor then back to hut. I shaved and got cleaned up. Went to breakfast, had cold porridge, sausages and bacon, then I went back to hut after reading Charlie's paper. It is a glorious morning. 9 am on parade. Dismissed and went to clear up dining room. Sudler came and helped me. Packed up for break at 10.35. I went and sat on my bed till 10.55, then cleaned up the rec room. Packed up 11.50 and had a wash. 12 o'clock I got my ** and went over to dinner. Has cod fish, white sauce and potatoes, jam pudding and custard. Went to the bar and had a grapefruit and then a nap on the bed until half past one. I went over to the dining hall to clear up and waited while the main guard  goons had finished.Swept up rec room and went over to hut, looked at gen books and read Death's Eye. 4 o'clock had tea, brawn, lettuce, onion jam. Went and got dressed and cycled over to Rodwell. I met Doris and Lyn, and Doris was better. She has a few bumps and also had taken blood mixture. We went and saw the kid and Lyn gave it a bundle of greenstuff. We sat down and watched the kid in the shade and then walked back. It is a lovely evening. We cleared away. Mrs Seaton gave me a tomato. We put Lyn to bed and I read to her then we went down to the corn fields with the gun. We saw pigeons but they kept out of the way. We sat in the hedge and walked back about 8.45. I cleaned the gun and sat in the chair. Had supper and back to camp.

Rodwell.
Up usual time and more or less usual jobs. Mrs Seaton in Calne most of the morning. Finished 2.30, Lyn asleep. Mended a frock, camis and petticoat, bath, got the tea and we had ours and went to meet Bill. Went down and fed the kid 6.20. She's getting much tamer. Cleaned up, washed up etc, put Lyn to bed & R.R.Hood, then went down to the wheat field with Bill & gun for a few minutes. Up to the top and now to bed 10.35 pm so G. Night.
