Tuesday 31st March
Bill
Up about 8.30, shaved and down to breakfast by 9.l5. Walked down town with Dad. Sent telegram off to Mornont and Bridges Calne and tried to buy a Last but could not get one, so walked back with Dad. Had dinner and played draughts. I won the odd. Had tea. Rose and Harold and Ann Rose came to tea. After tea I played bagatelle with Doris. She beat me. Watched Nettie, Ivy, Harold paying dice. Went back and played another game of bagatelle.
Doris
Barnet. Up 10-ish. Bill went off down the town - I beat him 3 games of bagatelle first! I did bits of washing and turning odd things out. Anne came at two with Harold. I snoozed till 3.15 - bad head againm till Rosie came. Did a good packet of washing before tea. Little Rosie and Nettie came, we all played bagatelle and talked and played about. Lyn got excited. I beat Bill every game I played him! Sat talking after they had all gone till 11, then bed. Lyn awake and 12 was sick! G. Night.

Monday 30th March
Bill
Up about 9.30, went down the town and looked over some books. Bought a piece of rubber and a tube of solution, a book in tactics and a bone. Came back to dinner. After dinner Doris and I walked over to Potters Bar to see George Dyer. We stopped until he milked his cows, then walked back. It was cooler but we felt tired. After tea we played draughts. I won several, then listened to news and went to bed early. Doris had a headache.

Barnet. Up about 10.00 am. Bill went wandering down the town. I messed about all the morning, helped Mother etc. Had a little sit down after dinner, then Bill and I walked to Dyer's. We were there by 3.30 and stayed till past four. Home by 5.30. Lyn went by bus to Station Road to see Jean off. Dad and Bill played draughts all the evening. I snoozed chiefly. Ivy bathed Lyn and told her 3 Bears, and I put her into bed. Still very headachey, indigestion I think. To bed very tired 10.50 pm. G. Night.

Sunday 29th March
Bill
Up very late but Lyn was up by seven. We had breakfast, I read poultry books and talked about goats. We had dinner late, chicken and plum pie, very nice. After dinner we went for a walk with Dad. It was very warm out. We sat on a seat for a long while then walked home to tea, feeling thirsty and tired. After tea, played draughts and read my book. Went to bed early.

Barnet. Up to 11 am breakfast but Lyn was up at 7. Messed away the morning helping and reading goats. Dinner 2 - chicken, out for a walk with Dad and Bill all round the woods after, gloriously warm. Hand round tea, girls went to Church so I bathed Lyn and put her to bed. Snoozed all the evening with a headache and feeling tired. Bill and dad played draughts. Got a touch of toothache. A bit earlier to bed - tired after yesterday I expect. I wish we were still at Cedars. 10.15pm.

Saturday 28th March
Bill
Up at 20 to six. We got up together and Doris went down stairs to get the breakfast. 7 o'clock the car came round. It was a nice morning but cool. We all got in, dad at the front, then Jean and Ivy, Mum and Doris and Lyn and I at the back. We started off on the road. Lyn was sick over Ivy. We got out and cleared up, then resumed the journey. Lyn got out three times because she was feeling sick. We went on the wrong road, stopped by police to put notice on, went back to Ipswich and on to by pass. Got to Cedars about quarter past eleven. Doris and I went down to get key. Saw Major Bell. He came up with us. We went indoors, mice had been everywhere. Wed got fire going, put carpet down and lit stove. Mice had torn eiderdown and blankets. I hunted round for things. Pipes were burst in lavatory and scullery. We had dinner, steak pie. After then we caught bus to Hollesley and bought some chocolate. Got to Gwen's, I hardly recognised her, she had her teeth out, and now Mum. I cycled down to Shingle Street with Ray to see Dad. He was well, saw *** and Gladys. Dad came back with us, he was pleased to see them all. We caught the bus at half past four to the *** then walked home. Les had got tea ready. We had a walk round garden with Major Bell. Packed up things and *** back. We made good progress. My telegram came. We were pleased it was dark on the road but moon light. Reached home good time. Lyn slept part of the way. A very nice day.

Leslie had dinner with us. Bussed to the Fox and walked to Gwen's after. Bill cycled to Shingle Street and brought Mr L back to Cedars for tea. Bill and I went round the garden with Major, we left at 7 and got home here by 10. A lovely day. I wish we could have stayed for good. Bed now very tired, 11.00 pm.

Friday 27th March
Bill
Up about 20 to nine. Doris had a card from Mrs Thrower saying her nan had two kids, a nanny and Billy. That started Doris off on goats again. She would like a kid to rear. I got downstairs 9 am and read the Press. Had scrambled egg and *** on toast and porridge. Enjoyed it very much. After then, changed my socks and got Lyn's coat for her. Went down the town with Mum and Lyn and I bought a bell and grips and some valve rubber. I carried some stuff she bought, some fish fins for the cats, 11d a lb, what a price things are now, savoys 1s 1d each. Came back and had dinner. After dinner I had a rest in the chair till about four then Doris and I went for a walk over old Manor grounds. We saw a grey squirrel and then walked over the fields, saw some frog spawn and then went back by Hadley Woods back by the golf course. Had tea. After tea I played draughts with Dad, he won four, I won one and a draw. We had supper and Doris got ready for the morning and we went to bed early. Put the alarm for half past five. Goodnight.

Finished Lyn;s frock this evening and did odd jobs for tomorrow. *** and Dilys came in for a few moments. Packed up the *** for tomorrow. To bed now 10.15pm. G. Night.

Thursday 26th March
Bill
Up 9.30, had breakfast, bacon, sausage. Read the paper, played a game of bagatelle with Doris. I won the odd game. After then I was going down the town with Mother but she did not go in the end, so I went down on my own about half past eleven, much to the disgust of Doris who said there wasn't time, but I went down and bought some moth balls, 6 1/2d worth, and some grease-proof cellulose, a small arms manual and a reel of sticking plaster, and Rhino *** for Doris and Lyn's boots. I got back in time for dinner, Shepherd's pie, toast and rice pudding. After dinner I sat in the arm chair and read my book and had a short nap. Then we took Lyn and went for a walk over the fields. It was very cold and windy. I played with Lyn's ball much to her amusement. She did enjoy herself. We got back to tea and then after tea I found a book and had a look in the shop, also watched them building a hen house for Dad. In the evening I played draughts with him. I won 4 and he won three. Packed up at 1/4 to 11 and went to bed as Doris was tired.

After dinner, finished my book and Bill slept until 3.30, got Lyn up and took her over Byng Road fields and played Ball with her. Knitted and read all the evening. Finished Lyn's dress and Mother almost finished the knickers. Bill played draughts with Dad. Ivy bathed Lyn and Jean took her to bed. They took her out after tea too. Tired now and bed 10.45pm so Good Night.

Wednesday 25th March
Bill
Up about 9 am, shaved with my new blades, it was a treat to get a good shave. Went down to breakfast and had cheese on toast and porridge. Went down to the Post office with Dad and Lyn. I got a telegram form, then we walked over to the manor grounds and had a walk round. After then we took my watch to Fenners for a new glass. Came back to dinner. Rose came in the afternoon, with Rose her *** to tea. We had a walk round the fields, it was lovely and warm and we sat on a stump and watched the lambs on the fields. We got back to tea and then we got the bagatelle out, I played with Dad and two rubbers. After then we had a rest by the fire. It was very warm. Harold and Rose went to a show and left Ann with us. She was got and stayed up till ten. After then we had supper, cheese and biscuits, then went to bed feeling very tired and contented.

Tuesday 24th March
Bill
Up about 9.30, had a good breakfast, bacon, porridge and fried potatoes. After then I read both newspapers and went down the town to get some Awbridges two bottles and a bottle of TCP, a tin of boracic ointment, a box of cough sweets and a real of cotton, two 7 o'clock razor blades for Doris and a dozen wardonid blades for myself. I read various books in Smith's book stall and Boots. I came back and was a bit late for dinner. We had roast beef, carrots, potatoes and plum pudding. We arranged to go and see G. Dyer and asked Dad and Mum to go with us. They were pleased to go. It was a lovely day, very warm and a clear sky. After dinner we set out with Lyn in the pram. It was a nice walk and G was feeding pigs. He had a calf and 7 little pigs and some ***. We chatted and watched the cows being milked. After then Mum and Dad with Lyn caught a bus and we took the pram and walked back. My knee was troublesome and had a blister on my heel so I was glad to get back. We had tea, some corned beef pickles and sauce and cake. After tea we sat round the fire and talked. Nettie was here to tea. I played draughts with dad and he won three and I won 1 and a draw. had supper, biscuits and cheese and tea. We listened to news. Doris rang up Major Bell to ask him if it was alright to go down to the lodge. he was very pleased that we would be coming down and then we got ready for bed. We sat in front of the fire discussing farming and things in general.

Put Lyn to bed directly after dinner, got her up at 2.30 and with her and Mother and dad we walked over to Dyers. He's exactly the same. We walked back but M and D and Lyn bussed. Nettie here, we played Rummy. Dad and Bill played draughts. Going to Cedars on Saturday by car for the day, all of us. Talked, bed now about 11.30. It's lovely to be at Barnet again. G. Night.

Monday 23rd March
Bill
Up about 7 and got into my PT kit. I was the only one and it was bitterly cold. After then I put my pullover on, did some running and got tripped up. Went down with a crash and bruised and took off the skin of my knee and chipped my fingers. I went and washed it and shaved. Went into no. 1 room and but a bandage on it. I went to breakfast, it was eggs and bacon. It looked very nice but I only drank the tea and ate the porridge. I gave my egg and bacon to Jeff Suiter. I was already dressed. They had field craft on and I waited till they were gone, then went to do a little work. mr Ball sent for me and told me he was putting the board in the 12 guard hut and he asked me if I was getting ready to go on leave. He said I could go now so I got my pass and *** and cycled down to Hillmarton. I was down there about half past ten. I made the bed, packed up some things and helped Doris. We were getting ready and Mr Smeaton brought three lambs in and Kidlet would liked to have stopped. The car came and we were at Chippenham station in no time. I saw Denis White and the other lads there. We got on the train, but no seats so sat in the corridor. J. Doughty came and talked for a little while and the guard found us a seat in first class. we got in to Paddington Station, saw Mum and Dad in the car and went to pick up Ivy. we got home and had tea and sat round the fire. *** was there, we chatted all the evening and felt very pleased it was all night for a week. We went to bed content.

Up about 7.45 and went to breakfast. Had bacon, porridge. After breakfast I had a shave and a general clean up and drew my PT kit, very nice. I read the paper and went into dinner early. Had a game of bagatelle by myself. Bought two packets of Players and then had dinner which was mutton and potatoes, fruit salad, custard. After dinner I went back to hut and got ready to go out. My bed was already made. I was soon out of the gate and went down to Calne Station. I found the waiting room shut and no one about so after waiting patiently for some while I departed for Rodwell and Doris was pleased about going home. I sat by the fire till about half past four then cycled down to Calne again. It was easier going down then coming back. Found booking clerk had a rrived there so went inside and he changed the six warrants. I was thankful that the job was done and went back to Rodwell. Had tea and washed up while Doris made a pair of shoes for Lyn's doll. I put things away, fed Kala and put Lyn to bed, and sat by fire reading. Afterwards Kidlet rang up Barnet and told Dad we should be catching the 12.38 train from Chippenham. we had supper and then I cycled back to camp feeling very tired after cycling 22 miles. I soon got in to bed.

Rodwell. Up 8.45 and Lyn - nice lay in. Washed up, did potatoes and beds. Mr S brought in a baby lamb but took it out again before dinner. Did Lyn's doll's frock. Continued the frock after dinner and made some lambskin shoes for it. Bill came 3.30 but had to go to Calne 4.30 to cash travel warrants but back by 5.30. Bill read and I did various little *** jobs all the evening, including Bill's trouser bottoms. Excited - home tomorrow! Seven whole days of Bill! Didn't go up to the top with Bill because of my cold - bed 10.45.

Afterwards Kidlet rang up Barnet and told Dad we should be catching the 12.38 train from Chippenham. we had supper and then I cycled back to camp feeling very tired after cycling 22 miles. I soon got in to bed.

Rodwell. Up 8.45 and Lyn - nice lay in. Washed up, did potatoes and beds. Mr S brought in a baby lamb but took it out again before dinner. Did Lyn's doll's frock. Continued the frock after dinner and made some lambskin shoes for it. Bill came 3.30 but had to go to Calne 4.30 to cash travel warrants but back by 5.30. Bill read and I did various little *** jobs all the evening, including Bill's trouser bottoms. Excited - home tomorrow! Seven whole days of Bill! Didn't go up to the top with Bill because of my cold - bed 10.45.

Saturday 21st March
Bill
Up at 6.45 and had a wash. On PT. Found I wasn't on guard so was pleased. Arranged to get warrants changed for Kilgour and Dan Hamilton. Bought *** found some coupons to and got some fags. Made some more models and went to dinner. MacDonald gave me his warrant and Frennington's to cash. I had Kelly to help me as he wanted to get away early on pass. Got dressed and went out. Cycled over to Hillmarton. Doris still had a cold. We did not go out in the afternoon but went and had a look at the sheep in the evening. Put Lyn to bed and sat by fire. The pig had been killed. I read Endless Furrow and found it good. We also arranged about a car to Chippenham. We had Liver for supper, it was excellent. I had two helpings, very nice, and some good coffee. We discussed Lambs and lambing. After supper I washed up and got ready to go. I did not let Doris come out with me as she had a wheeze on her chest and I did not want to have her get any more colds. I found the lamp would not go but it was alright when I put a piece of paper in the back. Got back about eleven ten and got to bed.

Rodwell. Up usual time, really and truly messed away the morning and f elt very rotten with a rotten cold and cough. Lyn had dinner with us - lots, then bed. Finished by 2.05 then did all my ironing. Then Bill arrived unexpectedly - good. Spent the rest of the afternoon Bill putting *** into Lyn;s shoes. After tea, went to see the sheep and lambs, and all round the fields. Put Lyn to bed and stories. I made a bodice for Lyn on the machine, then carried on with her doll's frock. Bill read, I didn't go out with Bill tonight. Dear **, bed 10.45 pm. Pig killed.

Friday 20th March

Up at 6.45 on PT and then cleaned up. Had breakfast, bacon and beans and porridge. Started work on models and saw Flt Lt Ball. He asked me if I would measure the sand board off. I cut out some sections and Lewis guns. Went on pay parade, drew £3.0.0 ** ration money. Had dinner, it was corned beef, potatoes and a mince meat roll with custard on. I had two helpings. After dinner I bagged Kelly to help me in the afternoon. He was pleased to do so. I rang up Doris. She had a sore throat and cold. I hope she is better. Started work on Ack Ack guns and tripod. Kelly helped me to get boards. Then I packed up for tea which was tinned meat and a piece of currant cake. After tea we discussed hoarding and the Jews. Polished boots and hat badge. Went on parade quarter to seven for roll call, all correct, and went to supper. It was stew and a piece of cheese. I cam back, mad bed and had a read. After then I went over to the phone and rang up Doris. Her cold and throat wasn't any better but she had arranged about going to Chippenham. I had asked Rolf and he said he would try and get my pass in the morning. I want to catch one of the early trains 12.38 or 1.05. The lamb died just as she was thinking of taking it upstairs. I saw George Daughty's plane. It was nice. I chatted till 9.15 and then had a bath and got into bed. Had a smoke and a read and then lights out and goodnight.

Got Lyn up and then Philip (Mrs S had gone to Calne). Took the two to hang it out, then stayed out, knitting while they played in the garden. Got tea, put Lyn to bed then knitted and read. Bill rang up dinner time but we got cut off almost at once, and rang up again this evening. He's all right. It's early but I've got a filthy cold on my chest chiefly, so bed, 10.05 pm.

Had a call at 5.50. Dressed, made bed, called Jack Launi. I made him touch his forehead three times to show he was awake. Went on to gun post. Did the stand too, saw Bob Barker at breakfast and then went over to his bunk with him. I put my kit inside, washed and shaved and then went back feeling better after a breakfast of corn flakes and sausages. it was a misty rain so could not do guns. Went down to armoury to tell them about gun mountings. Saw Sq Ld Fish. He asked me what I was doing and I told him I was on one post, then he said have you finished that job over there yet and I said I had got some more to do. He asked me about that camouflage job on the *** and suggested some things to do and asked me to to think out a plan for it. I said I would. Armourer came and fixed guns, then I oiled them. Arthur Smith brought a letter to say that the men could help with banking up the post. I said I would but did not do much as it was wet. Went to dinner. It was meat pie and greens, and fruit pies and custard. Came back to clean up kit. Relieved post, took C Flt guard back and dismissed them. Cycled over to Rodwell. Brought a lamb in. Doris fed it. I thought she looked like old times. Took me back years. Went up to village, Doris bought me shaving stick and two ounces of tobacco, *** I was pleased with it, then we had tea before we went out. I mend Lyn's cot and doll, read her a story, and then Furrow and I talked about leave. We had supper and then I cycled back. Made bed, had a smoke and went to sleep.

Sat round the fire, Bill read 'Endless Furrow' and I knitted. Up to the top with Bill. I was going to take the lamb up to bed to look after it but it has just died. So to bed, I feel too weary to stay up and knit. 10.50.

Wednesday 18th March

Up 6.45 and had a wash and a cup of cocoa, then went on P.T. in the hanger. After then I shaved, glad that I had polished up the night before. I had breakfast which was bacon and tomato. The bacon wasn't too good but I enjoyed the bread and butter in the tomato. Went on with cutting out frame for models. 10.15 went down office to see Flt Lt Ball and he asked me about my extension. He said it wasn't in his power to give me extra because it would have to go before the group commander and a reason such as illness could only be granted. He said if I could not get it done, wire for two days. He wold grant it. I forgot to mention I was going to Barnet as well but I don't think I'll risk going to Cedars as well. I sharpened my chisels and then went to office to see Mr Ball about some models and he wanted some *** guns and *** hedges and trees made. I shall do them. Also I needn't bother with a frame as Mr Godfry is short of wood. Had dinner. Rang up Doris. We had peas, fish cakes and prunes and custard. Told Doris about arrangements, said she would ring up Mother and tell her I am going to ring her up tonight on post. Had tea, liver, spuds. On stand to, had supper, corned beef. Rang up Doris and she had rung up Dad. He was pleased. Arranged for call in morning. Mad bed and got to bed.

Knitted hard all the evening. Rang Dad up and said we were going on Monday. Bill rang up dinner time then again at 9.00 tonight. He has as good as got the extension if he likes to wire for it next Saturday, we shall talk it over tomorrow. He's on No. 1 Yatesbury. Roll on Monday - how happy Lyn will be. Bed now as I feel drowsy. 10.50 pm so G. Night.

Up at 6.47, cleaned up and made bed. Went on P.T. After P.T. had breakfast, boiled egg, porridge. After breakfast went on to job and gave Rolf his papers and my address, also appointment. Saw Flt Sg Pritchard, he wanted me to do a map and some plans of gun *** and keep them in drying room. After dinner which was meat and potatoes and cake with jam and custard on, I saw Rolf and he said they couldn't give me extra time, but I could wire for it and they could give it then. Well, I was feeling very browned off. Told Doris, she didn't hold any hopes of it. Saw Flt Sg ***, he hadn't got the papers, but he said I could take some men over to Yatesbury and get a Smiths gun. Back about half past three. Got six hand grenades and put in armoury. Went back to hut, had tea and it was brawn, cake. Saw Rolf, he said go round office in morning and see about leave. Went in hut, mooped about browned off, thick head, and went into different huts to see old lads. Had hair cut and forgot to pay Butch for it. Then rang Doris up, she said she thought we had it. (Bought several bars of chocolate and a box of 29.)

Got Lyn up 3.45 and read her new book to her while I knitted till tea time. Bill rang up dinner time and this evening - had a long chat this evening. He is quite all right, no real news of the 48 hrs till tomorrow but very very doubtful. Knitted all the evening till now but very disappointed in it. Fed up with it and tired now, so to bed 10.55. Hope Bill is lucky!!

Monday 16th March

Up at 5 past 6 and got guns out ready for stand to 6.30. Came off 7.30 and had breakfast, suasage and bacon, porridge. Went on guard again 8.45 till ten thirty. Came off, took bed back and they were moving into huts. I managed to get a bed and a locker in hut and then shifted some of my stuff. Washed, shaved. Had dinner, it was meat, potatoes, treacle pudding. Came off guard, went over to D.O. to see about leave extension, then W.O. gave me a form. I dressed, went over to armoury at Yatesbury to see W.O.. He was ok about guns. Cycled on to Rodwell, it was windy. Doris was pleased to see me. We talked and went over different things. About leave, she was disappointed not being able to ring Mother up. We had tea. Doris told me about the lambs, Lyn was playing with Jill and Bridget. It was raining hard outside, windy. We put Lyn to bed, I read her some stories. Sat by fire, studied medical dictionary, and then had supper. Doris walked up the drive. It was raining. I got back about eleven. Very strange to go in another hut. Miss the old boys.

Mrs S out so got Philip up 3.30, then Lyn up at 4. Then Bill came. He is thoroughly fed up, not even cheered up at the thought of leave. Going to try tomorrow to get 48 hours on his leave. Put Lyn to bed and Nursery Rhymes. Bill changed his clothes. Bill read and I read and knitted all the evening. Up to the top with Bill, terrible night, warm but ever so wet and windy. To bed now and I hope Bill will cheer up. 10.20 pm so G. Night.

Sunday 15th March

Sunday up at 8.15, felt browned off. Went to breakfast, had porridge, liver and bacon, coffee. Came back and cleaned up buttons and ammunition. Read The People, felt better. Cut off a piece of wood and started to make a house for Lyn, but it did not go right, so decided the Sabbath was not a good time to start. Packed up at 12. Went to dinner and had stew and date pudding and custard. Rang up Doris, she was harping on about that extra time for leave. I heard Lyn on the phone and she broke the foot off her doll. Said I would ring up at 8. Got ready for guard on 7 post. *** and on first shift. Read a story and came off, sat in guard room, cursed having to be in on a Sunday. Went to tea and had German sausage and a piece of cake. It needed a ramrod to push it down. Toasted cake and sat by fire, am going back to guard hut 5.20. Had a read and went on at stand to 19.05. 20.00 had supper, pies and baked potatoes. Rang up Doris and then got my bedding over, read some magazines and then got into bed. Read for a while and then dropped off to sleep.

Saturday 14th March

Up at 7.15 and saw Ted Gergal and Arther Tirns was back. I had breakfast and it was nice, a lovely fried egg on fried bread and porridge. Started work on models and pained them. Saw the duty officer, had a smoke during break, then carried on. Also yarned with Bill Gale on various. Had dinner, meat, potatoes and tapioca. Bought a bar of Palmolive soap and rang Doris up. Told her I was having my leave on the 23/3/42 and she was pleased. She asked me to ask for an extension and it would be nice to go home. Turner got 7 day CB for letting a man in and not seeing that he went to the guard room. After dinner, started on Ken *** tank. I got it finished, painted it, and Goody told me he had gone home as an ATS girl had written to his wife and said she had been going out with him. Had tea, brawn, lard cake. Painted and finished tank. Reg Thursly told me WO wanted to see me at armoury on Monday owing to guns being rung over in sockets. Finished tank. Did some reading. Went to supper, salmon. Rang Doris up and she had been getting in the lambs. Had a bottle of ginger beer and listened to news, and 9.15 bed.

Rodwell. Up usual time and all usual jobs except that I did a spot of washing for Lyn. Spent all the afternoon outside while Lyn was asleep. Brought two ewes and their lambs into the pens from the field. Got Lyn up, got tea then took Lyn and went to inspect rest of the sheep. One more lamb, another by tea - that's 7 today. Bill rang up dinner time and tonight. We go on leave on the 23rd - cheers. Lovely sunny warm day. Knitted hard at Lyn's skirt all the evening, run out of wool, have to unpick her knickers. Bed now 11..22pm.
Up at 7.15 and saw Ted Gergal and Arther Tirns was back. I had breakfast and it was nice, a lovely fried egg on fried bread and porridge. Started work on models and pained them. Saw the duty officer, had a smoke during break, then carried on. Also yarned with Bill Gale on various. Had dinner, meat, potatoes and tapioca. Bought a bar of Palmolive soap and rang Doris up. Told her I was having my leave on the 23/3/42 and she was pleased. She asked me to ask for an extension and it would be nice to go home. Turner got 7 day CB for letting a man in and not seeing that he went to the guard room. After dinner, started on Ken *** tank. I got it finished, painted it, and Goody told me he had gone home as an ATS girl had written to his wife and said she had been going out with him. Had tea, brawn, lard cake. Painted and finished tank. Reg Thursly told me WO wanted to see me at armoury on Monday owing to guns being rung over in sockets. Finished tank. Did some reading. Went to supper, salmon. Friday 13th March
Bill
The police called me six o'clock. I signed the book, then I dressed and went up to gun post. Got guns out. Lester was awake. We stood too and then the other chap went to breakfast as he had no supper last night. After then Lester went and I followed on. Made the bed up and went over to ***. it was porridge and kidneys in thick gravy, good, butter and very sweet tea. After then I went back to the hut and had a wash and shave. went back to gun post and cleaned out pits. The guns were cleaned. The wind very cold and hazy clouds overhead. *** time signal just gone. Went to dinner and had meat with minced parsnip and fruit pies and custard. Went back to post and cleaned up buttons and rifle. Packed up kit and got ready to go back, relieved by Reg Thundby. Got back to *** camp and got ready to go out and made bed. Cycled over to Rodwell and Doris was indoors. She had got Philip, Mr and Mrs Smeaton went to Chippenham. I sat in chair very tired. Had tea and went up to Post Office. We walked back slowly. Doris gave me an ounce of tobacco. I was lucky. We got back and Lyn took me to see the lamb. After then we washed up and I got some wood. I finished *** and read the F.S.B and then had supper, discussed sheep and then went back to camp. I got back about 11.15.

Got Lyn up and got tea and we had ours 4.30, then went up to the village. Got a certificate. Came back and us three went to see the ewe and first lamb, dear little mottled fellow. Put Lyn to bed, and then washed up 7.50 before we settled. Bill read and I knitted and finished one half of Lyn's skirt. Jill gone to Mary Matthews till Monday! Up to the top gate and now to bed 10.45.

Thursday 12th March
Bill
Up at 7.15, had breakfast. It was still raining. Had porridge but could not tackle fish, it smelt strong near the bone so I drank my tea and took my bread and butter over to hut and had some Beetox on it. 9.00 outside at work, shaped up one or two models to fit board, then had a smoke by the fire at break time. Found I was on one post Yatesbury. Had dinner, corned beef, beans and potatoes, and date pudding and custard. After then, I rang up Doris and told her I was on duty, then went to get cleaned up. On parade and over to one post. It was cold. Took over from Kelly. Guns were rusty so we cleaned and oiled them well. They had been out in the rain.
11 till 12 had a lecture and talk by Flt Lt Ball. 3 o'clock went down to Post Office and put £5 in the P.O.S.B. After then I went on the post. Lester and another one with me. I went to tea, had raspberry jam bun, and salmon. Went back to post till others had theirs. After stand down, went to supper, found it was 8.50, we had been on too long. Lester's watch had run down, so went to *** and had sausage and fried bread and three rings doughnuts and a cup of tea. Saw Bob Banker and had a chat with him. He offered his bunk to me as he had a spare bed. I accepted and went to bed about ten 20. Goodnight.

Knitted after tea, put Lyn to bed then knitted all the evening but don't think there's enough wool to finish Lyn's skirt. Supper usual time but Mrs S reminiscing - but now to bed and I feel tired. Another long lonely day without Bill. 10.40 pm. Goof Night.

Wednesday 11th March

Up about 7.10 and shaved, cleaned up and had breakfast, tomatoes tin and bacon, porridge, coffee. After breakfast I sat by fire and wrote some of this diary. Started work on hangers and scraped oil off Ken ***'s piece of wood. Had a smoke. Kelly borrowed my rifle. It was raining hard. had dinner. It was baked meat mixture in a crust, potatoes, parsnips and pudding with syrup. I bought a bar of chocolate and lent Kelly 6d. Then I saw some tobacco and reserved it for tomorrow and paid for it after having a 6d off Duffy. Rang Doris up. She had a leter to say the certificates had been transferred to Lyn. Went back to hut, it was still raining. Kelly is getting ready for guards. Went on working, fetched some more dope and finished the hanger. gave some dope to Bill Gale to do his wellington with. Went to tea, it's still raining. Had tinned meat, cake, watery tea. I had another slice of cake.After tea I started on Ken ***'s tank and worked till about 7. Went to supper. It was toad in the hole, quite nice. I went back to hut, did some reading, then got my tobacco and had a drink. Rang Doris up. She was lonely. I felt tired, made bed, in it by nine. Frank wearing ***.

Knitted and read till 4, then got Lyn up, knitted and read her bunny book then she played nurses with Jill and Bridgit, and also after tea too. Put Lyn to bed. Finished my skirt and then wrote for shoes for Lyn, and to Mother, then knitted. Bill rang up dinner time and again this evening - it's very lonely without him, doesn't seem any point in life the days he doesn't come. Tomato omelettes for supper. Bed now - 10.20.

Tuesday 10th March

Up about 5.50, got dressed and went down to get guns. Got in guard room 6.15, a bit early as we were not on till 6.43 so we stopped a little while. Then on the post, cam off at 7.43 and went to breakfast. had porridge and faggots, then back to the post, on from 8.43 till ten twenty. All guns had been cleaned so I swept out post and cleaned all stuff from outside, so made it all tidy, and burned rubbish. Came off 10.20 and went for a shave and wash. Took my blankets back, cleaned up my buttons and felt very much better. After then I went to G. Room and did some reading, then over to dinner. It was mutton and carrots, potatoes, bread pudding and custard. Dismissed Guard. Cycled over to Rodwell. I was there by 2.45. Doris was pleased. I sat in the chair, we discussed goats, then got Lyn up. had tea and went up to the Post office. Doris bought some marzipan and we ate some of it. Lyn pushed her pram. We got in and washed up, and then put Lyn to bed. I read her new story book to her. Then sat by fire, finished Farmer's Glory and had a sleep from 9 till 10, then supper, pilchards on toast. Biked camp 11.30.

We sat and talked in the dining room till nearly four, then I got Lyn up and Bill played and read to her while I got tea. We had our tea on our own 4.15 then went up the shop, got stamps etc. Put Lyn to bed, Bill read her new book to her. Round the fire all the evening, Bill finished Farmer's Glory, then slept. I knitted and read. Up to the top gate and now to bed 10.45pm.

Monday 9th March

Up about 7.10, dressed and went to breakfast. Had porridge, bacon, then went on with the job. Finished off the frame, painted the others in and shaped up the models.Told I was on seven post so cleaned up and had dinner after which minced meat and rice pudding, went on parade then on to post from 12.45 - 15.15. Then sat in hut reading. Rang Doris up. We were not very cheerful. *** Deny gone away to old unit for a time. One of the lads asked me to shape a plane for him.I did so, he gave me a packet of fags. Had tea, brawn, cake, then went on from 18.48 till 19.48. Put guns away at store too then to supper. Welsh Rarebit, had two and some cocoa. It was cold. Chatted to one of the lads then rang up Doris. She was pleased to hear from me, I was glad to talk to her. After then I got my blankets, made my bed. Did some more reading, then arranged for duty runner to call me at 5.50. Got in bed, went on with reading till 10.00.

Very defiant and naughty during and after tea, so put her to bed. She was furious - awful scene. Calmed down and I read her a few nursery rhymes. let out my navy skirt all the evening. Bill rang up at nine and at dinner time, on No. 7 post, but all right. Bed now 10.12pm. G. Night.

Sunday 8th March
Bill
Up about half past eight. I dressed Lyn and washed her, also shaved then down to breakfast. We had porridge with syrup and creamy milk, bacon and egg with fried bread. Then we washed up and went for a walk. Lyn pushed the pram with her dolls sitting up. We went a good way and let Kala off but she was a bit lame. We got home in time for dinner, roast beef, potatoes and carrots with trifle and stewed rhubarb, very nice. After dinner we washed up, then put Lyn to bed and sat in the chair by the window in the sun. It was lovely and warm and we dropped off to sleep. We had tea and then washed up and took Lyn out to see the sheep. She got stuck in the mud so I pulled her out. We put her to bed. She had a few stories and then went down stairs. I wrote a note to Mum and Dad Barnet, and Doris enclosed the photos of Frank. We read and had supper then very sorrowfully went up the drive. A very happy weekend. 11.30 bed.

Back to dinner. Washed up together and put Lyn to bed, then drew the wing armchair in my room up to the window and we sat there warm in the sun and snoozed till past 4!! Got Lyn up. Bill did tgea, took Lyn overf the fields to see the sheep, then bed and Nursery Rhymes. We both wrote to Mum then Bill read and I knitted. Supper. Up to the top gate with Bill. Very lonely now. Bed 10.30 pm.

Had dinner, meat, carrots and pudding with custard. Dismissed, got pass, packed up and went to Rodwell full of beans. met Doris up the drive. We got Lyn up, had tea and went to the Post Office. Lyn took me for a walk. We walked back another way. Lyn pushed the pram. Then we cleared away and washed up. Put Lyn to bed and I read to her. We went down stairs and I read Farmer's Glory and enjoyed it. We had supper and it was nice, baked onions and two cups of cocoa as I did not have to bike back to camp. It was very nice to know I was staying the night. I had a bath. Doris had one too, then to bed. It was very nice to be together again. Goodnight.

Snow on ground, freezing. Up 7.30 and shaved, washed, made bed. Went to breakfast 8.20. it was fish but it was good and the porridge nice. Read paper at table then went back to hut. It is very cold and snow lies on the ground. I started work. Smithy came with me. He did not want to go on parade. I finished *** and *** hanger and gun post. Found I was 1 Post but changed to 7 as I was going on SOP and Bill Kilgour was on the M gun guard. This rather shook me as I wasn't expecting it owing to shortage of LACs. Went to pay parade, drew £2.0.0 and then started work again. Packed up at twelve, cleaned buttons, rifle. Had dinner, corned beef, potatoes, bread pudding and custard. Bought an ounce of shag from Len Kells. 1.30 on parade and went on first. It was cold. I rang Doris up. She had a letter and snaps of frank from Mother. Lyn had been inoculated. She screamed. met Joe McConnel. He was going away tonight instruction *** of *** wished him goodbye. Sat in guard hut. Went to tea, had rissoles and cake. RO to *** on stand too with A C Ball. 8 to eight. Packed up, rang Doris up. I wished I was there. Back to hut, had supper, pies potatoes. Had a cup of tea in hut and a good warm. Kelly arrived back. Had a chat then took blankets over to guard hut. made bed and got in to it.

Rodwell. Up usual time. Went with Mrs S to take the girls to school then to Dr James to have Lyn and Philip inoculated. Lyn yelled. Shopping in Calne and got back 10.30 am! Cleared breakfast and washed up, did beds and dining room and then had dinner. Cleared up and did my ironing, then knitted and snoozed in the dining room. Bill rang up dinner time that he was on 7 post. Rang up again tonight, all ok. Mrs Lucock sent £1 for us for Xmas and snaps of Frank, very good. Knitted all the evening and got on very well with Lyn's jumper. Bed now 10.35pm.

It is very cold and snow lies on the ground. I started work. Smithy came with me. He did not want to go on parade. I finished *** and *** hanger and gun post. Found I was 1 Post but changed to 7 as I was going on SOP and Bill Kilgour was on the M gun guard. This rather shook me as I wasn't expecting it owing to shortage of LACs. Went to pay parade, drew £2.0.0 and then started work again. Packed up at twelve, cleaned buttons, rifle. Had dinner, corned beef, potatoes, bread pudding and custard. Bought an ounce of shag from Len Kells. 1.30 on parade and went on first. It was cold. I rang Doris up. She had a letter and snaps of frank from Mother. Lyn had been inoculated. She screamed. met Joe McConnel. He was going away tonight instruction *** of *** wished him goodbye. Sat in guard hut. Went to tea, had rissoles and cake. Thursday 5th March
Bill
Up at 7.30 then cleaned up and shaved. It was snowing hard, a change. Started work on new armoury. Sq. Ld. Deny came in and wanted me to make a model for deflector on the ring and aperture sight, so I went down the hanger and saw Mr Godfry and got two pieces of wood. I then sharpened three chisels and got Doug Bloomfield to help me to cut some Beaver board through. I then cut down a plank for a frame and got Smithy to help me. Also asked if he could help me after dinner. we cut through two pieces, then went to dinner. Had mutton, swedes and potatoes and rice pudding. I had a bottle of lemonade. Came back to hut and sat by fire. Went on with the job. Made some of the joints. Went over and got a cup of tea and two slices of cake. Toasted cake in the hut, then changed and cycled over to Rodwell. Doris had a headache so did not come out. Had tea, Lyn and Jill, Bridgit had been playing at invalids. We saw Lyn in bed. She was happy as the children had been reading to her. Read Farmer's Glory and had a good warm. It was freezing. Had supper. Doris heard from Barnet.Got back to camp 11.10. Goodnight.

Rodwell. Up usual time and did beds and dining room, then ironed rest of the morning. Tried to do my own ironing this afternoon but such a bad headache cam on that I only got half done. Snoozed in the chair till 4 - then got Lyn up. Sat in the chair again until tea time. Bill came 5.30, got another little modelling job for the C.O. this time. Sat around the fire till 7 after tea, I put Lyn to bed, then round the fire. I thought and knitted and read, and Bill read. Laid breakfast. Up to the top with Bill. Black night, snowy. Bed 10.30.

Up about 7.20, washed, shaved and went to breakfast. Had bacon and porridge. Made a piece of toast, then back to work. Started making C Flt. Kelly was having a scrounge. Ken Hart borrowed my bike to go down to guard room. Storry gave me a chisel. Stopped for break 10.30. Carried on with work. Made a guard room. Had dinner, had fish cakes, parsnips and potatoes, prunes. I had 2 helpings of prunes. Went back to work and finished off C. Flt and painted some more of the others. Found someone had chipped one of them, so have to make another one. Filled my lighter. Kelly went on forty eight hours. I got dressed to go out and it was much milder and the rain had stopped. Met Doris with Lyn and we walked back. Had tea, washed up and put Lyn to bed. I read her stories, after then I read articles on turning and various other things. Also talked about poultry with Doris and had a little knowledge test. Had a good warm then supper. Doris walked up to the gate with me then cycled home. It was already eight *** got in 11.15. Had a smoke. The lads had gone to Filey. Goodnight.

Got Lyn up and got tea then went to meet Bill. Put Lyn to bed and nursery rhymes. Stayed up there a little while; Bill read and I read and knitted. Doesn't seem much to say but it's been a very, very happy evening - all's well now. Washed 2 socks for Lyn. Up to the top with Bill and now to bed very tired but happy. It's been a very wet day, but much milder. 10.30 pm so G. Night.

Up about 7 then cleaned up. Sharp frost. Had breakfast, bacon and tomato, porridge. Then back to work. Saw Mr Masterman. He was very pleased with them. He spoke about recent manouvers and Flt Lt Ball will be back on Monday. I started on wireless mast and painted some of it. Made a very good job of it. Had dinner, mutton, potatoes and carrots, currant pudding and custard. Put in a S.O.P for Sat. After dinner went on with work. The lads had their medical for ***. I painted up some more of the models, then went over for cupof tea. Had a sausage roll. Made my bed and cycled over to Rodwell. met Doris and Lyn. Have Lyn a ride on my bike. Had tea then put Lyn to bed, read her some stories. Doris had a letter from Ivy thanking her for birthday present. Also read Mother's letter. They had finished the rooms. *** had three kittens. Sat by fire and cleared up a few matters with Kidlet. Had supper, got back to camp, got in bed, had a smoke. Goodnight.

Got up about 6.50, dressed and had breakfast of porridge, bacon. Went back to work. Made a hut and painted up some barns then started on armoury and range. Had dinner, a minced up affair and currants in rice pudding. I had a ginger ale and made a piece of toast, then talked with Kelly. He failed his medical to go to ***, heart beats too fast. Started on more work then finished up with the paint. Went over and had a cupof tea and a piece of jam and cream sandwich. Cycled over to Rodwell. Doris was looking through the window, very pleased to see me. Mrs Smeaton had taken the children to see a conjuring show. Read nursery rhymes to Lyn in front of the fire. Put her to bed and then filled my lighter and read out of *** book. Had supper, mackerel on toast, then got ready to go out then. Cycled back to camp. Sat by the fire talking to Kelly till half past twelve. Had a smoke then in to bed.

Knitted till 3.15 then got Lyn up and she played in the *** with the others until early tea at 4.30. Mrs S, J and B went to conjurer at St Mary's. Bill here 5.15, read Lyn nursery rhymes in the dining room in her dressing gown. Bill read this evening and I knitted, but disappointed evening. Had last Thursday 'out' with Bill but no better. Still miserable tonight. Up to the top with him, very polite and nice. Bed 10.50 pm.

Sunday 1st March

Got up 7.30, dressed in great haste and went to gun post. Others were asleep and so we got guns out and ammunition. 8.15 went to breakfast and had corn flakes, bacon and coffee which were very good. Went back to the hut, made my bed and washed and shaved. Felt very much better. Went back to post and both men cleaned guns. I noticed a black cat came inside with mice and shrews she caught. Then all went to dinner, had batter pudding, roast potatoes and swedes, apple stewed and custard unsweetened. Went up for second helping and had Brussels sprouts with them, very nice. Found I had picked up wrong cup but this one was larger so rubbed of *** with emery. Cleaned rifle and buttons, signed the book. Good five inside *** by D.O. and then relieved, dismissed. Got ready to go out. Met Doris and Lyn. Got back and had a bath. Lyn was very thrilled to wash me and put powder on me. I had tea. It was Mrs Smeaton's birthday. Had a nice tea. Washed up and put Lyn to bed. Read to her. Then sat by fire reading and drew some figures in the childrens' book. Had supper and got back to camp.

Finished dinner things by 2.15, got Lyn up before three and took her to meet Bill. Bill had a bath before tea. Lyn washed, dried and powdered him. Put Lyn to bed, Bill read nursery rhymes. Sat round the fire, Bill read and snoozed. I finished unpicking the blue frock, then started knitting Lyn a blue jumper. 10.00 up to the top with Bill, very miserable and feeling terribly homesick. Knitted till now, 11.10, bed. G. Night.

Saturday 28th February
Bill
Up about 6.45, had breakfast and it was bacon, porridge, coffee. I started work, painted some barns and cleaned up. Had a nasty shock, I was put in charge of one post Yates. It shook me somewhat as I had planned to go out. Well, it cannot be helped. I cleaned up rifle and over hauled kit. Went to dinner and had meat, raw in places and onions and potatoes, sultana pudding with custard. Rang Doris up and told her I won't be coming. it shook her a bit as well. I got ready and on parade marched to C Flt and dismissed, took over from Kelly and checked on equipment. Found all correct and read a yarn on *** and brought this diary up to date. Had tea, it was a mixture of butter and cheese and jam and cake. Then went over to post office. They were closed till quarter to five, so went back to gun post and told Gates to go to tea. Saw Bob ***, he had just come off water guard. Went back to the post and did the stand to, then went to supper. I helped myself to *** on fried bread and some cake.I saw Stan *** and chatted with him. he was going to live out and was in the dental surgery. Very cold over ***. No fire.

Was I disappointed, like a pricked balloon - very flat day indeed. Knitted after dinner. Got Lyn up after three and took her round the fields, then she played out in the garden until tea time with the others. Tim and Mrs S went at 5. Jill put Phil to bed, but very troublesome. Bridgit bathed Lyn. I cut her hair. Finished Lyn's bodice for her skirt but oh I have missed Bill so very very much. Bed now 10.00 pm, hour earlier.

Up about 7.15, had breakfast, porridge and sausage and beans. Started making a barn and painted in roofs on houses. Helped Bill Gates with his models. made a gable ended Barn then went to dinner. had meat, swedes and potatoes and*** pudding. The pudding tasted funny and unsweetened. Started work on some more models. It was much warmer and my feet and hands had thawed a bit. I carried on till 4 then got ready to go out. Doris and Lyn met me. She had a doll and very pleased with it. I gave her a ride on the bike. we had tea and washed up, put Lyn to bed and then read her some stories out of her book. I went down and sat by the fire reading. Had supper and got ready to go out. Cycled back. Put new battery in rear light and changed the one in the front. Got back about 11.10 and sat by fire with Furnen having a smoke. I gave him some bread for toast. Got in bed and goodnight.

Bill C. got the sack today for throwing a clod at Percy and cutting his mouth. Got tea and then took Lyn to meet Bill. She took her doll. Put Lyn to bed and Bill read nursery rhymes, then Bill and I round the fire together. Bill read and I started to make a top for Lyn's skirt. Bill's remustering form has gone through to seconds. Up to the top with Bill, still a bit disappointed. bed now 10.50 pm.

They look very nice now. had dinner, meat, swedes and potatoes, also date pudding. Went back to work on models, then went over and had a cup of tea and a piece of Swiss roll. Cycled over to Rodwell and had tea. Put Lyn to bed and read her some nursery rhymes. They met me along the road. Sat by the fire and read till supper time. Doris rang Ivy up and I spoke to her and Mum. Had supper and washed up, then got ready to go back. Got back about eleven ten, sat by fire talking to Kelly, then went to bed. (Ivy's birthday)

We ranh Ivy up to wish her Many happy returns, and both spoke to Dad, Mum and ivy. it was lovely to hear their voices. Up to the top with Bill, I feel that I disappointed him tonight and I feel very mean and miserable about it. To bed now, tired, 10.30pm.
Got up about 7, shaved and went to breakfast. It eas fish so I declined. Ate my porridge and took bread back to hut and made some toast. Started work, painted up some houses. They look very nice now. had dinner, meat, swedes and potatoes, also date pudding. Went back to work on models, then went over and had a cup of tea and a piece of Swiss roll. Cycled over to Rodwell and had tea. Put Lyn to bed and read her some nursery rhymes. They met me along the road. Sat by the fire and read till supper time. Doris rang Ivy up and I spoke to her and Mum. Had supper and washed up, then got ready to go back. Got back about eleven ten, sat by fire talking to Kelly, then went to bed. (Ivy's birthday)

Got Lyn up and got the tea, then we went to meet Bill. Put Lyn to bed, Bill read to her. sat round the fire, I finished all the knitting part of Lyn's jumper. Bill read. Wednesday 25th February
Bill
Up at 7.22. made bed, shaved, took some hot water out to do so. Cleaned up, went to breakfast, had tomato and English bacon. It was lovely. I ate two slices of bread and butter, the first time in six months. Went back to hut to get ready for work. Made some houses with gable ends. Painted them with first coat. Went to dinner, had meat, swedes and potatoes, bread pudding with custard. Went back to work, got some bottles, shaped up some houses, started on armadillo. Packed up and went and had three cups of tea. Cycled over to Rodwell. Fed pigs ducks and calves. Collected the eggs and had tea. It was very nice. Put Lyn to bed. It was cold but before she went we went and had a look at the sheep. They were alright, but it was very cold. Mr and Mrs Smeaton and the children enjoyed the snow. I read to Lyn, then sat by fire reading while Doris knitted. I biked home and got in about 11.15.

Rodwell. Up usual time. They all went to Peter Pan at Oxford at 10.30 this morning. I had Philip all day. Lyn very queer all the morning and went to bed dinner time. Had a royal turn out and was better at once. Slept till 3.45 and Phil too. I ironed my own and Mrs S's from 1.30 to 4.45!!! Bill came 5.15 and fed calves, ducks etc. had tea on our own. Tuesday 24th February
Bill
Up about 7.15 then breakfast, fried egg on fried bread, porridge and coffee, then back to work. Made vickers guns, *** and hay stacks. Had dinner, roast beef, carrots, potatoes and pudding with custard. It is still very cold and some of the lads have touch of flue. Carried on after dinner. Mended pipe. Shaped some wood for Bill Gale. Got ready to go out. Went over and had two cups of tea and a piece of Swiss roll, beans on toast. Biked over to Rodwell and met Doris and Lyn. Lyn was thrilled because all the ducks flew in to the water. We walked home. Lyn had a ride on the saddle. There were visitors for tea so we cleaned away and had ours on our own. It was very nice honey, jam scones, tea cakes, buns and coffee sandwich. Very nice. I helped to clear away. Put Lyn to bed and read to her. Sat by fire. Had supper. Promised to feed stock.

Mrs Doble, Pe** D, Mrs Godwin and Barry came to tea. Lyn and I went to meet Bill then we had tea on our own so never saw the visitors at all. Put Lyn to bed, and Bill read her nursery rhymes out of her book. I knitted all the evening and Bill read and slept. Up to the top gate and now going to sew up half of Lyn's jumper and then bed now 10.40 - shan't be long. G. Night.

Monday 23rd February
Bill
Up about 7 am then breakfast, sausage and bacon. Then back to work. made some Vickers guns and Levis. Had a cup of cocoa. it was very cold and freezing. Went to dinner, had meat, swedes and potatoes, and stewed figs. Carried on with some more work. Got cleaned up, went over and had a cup of tea then biked over to Rodwell. met Doris and Lyn. It was very cold out. Several army lorries about. had tea then put Lyn to bed. Read her a story and then went down stairs to write to Mother. It took me nearly all the evening. The had a short rest and a warm. Had supper and biked home. Doris warmed up my battery. Kelly was sitting by the fire. I got in bed.

Mrs S went to Calne and took Philip so I did all her washing. Got tea and took Lyn to meet Bill. Lots of soldiers in Compton Bassett. Lyn was thrilled. Put Lyn to bed and Bill 'acted' nursery rhymes for her. I knitted all the evening and Bill wrote to Mrs Lucock. Supper and went up to the top gate with Bill. Came back and ironed my blue frock and Lyn's sleeping suit and talked to Mrs S. Bed now 11.15 pm.

Got up 8.545, went to breakfast, had rancid bacon, porridge, coffee. Read The People. Cleaned up, shaved, no hot water, had a hair cut and filled lighter. It is very cold and snowing slightly. Read paper and made up bed, then to dinner. had beef stew, pudding, then got ready to go out. Got on bike and went to Rodwell. Got Lyn up and sat by fire. I was picked up by Mr Smeaton and put bike on grid. Chatted to Mr Ganton on China and travels relating to Japan and other countries, also about salmon fishing. had tea and then sat round fire. It was too cold to go out. We brought Lyn down by the fire and I read to her. it was nice and warm. Then put her to bed. I sat by the fire reading with Doris till supper time, then has supper and biked back to camp. Had a warm, made fire up and got in bed. Goodnight.

Washed up tea things by 6.15 so brought Lyn into the dining room in her dressing gown and Bill read lots to her. We sat round the fire all the evening, I knitted, Bill read and slept. Up at 10 past 7 then cleaned up and went to breakfast. had All Bran and rissoles, tea. Came back and wrote up this diary. They are just calling outside, must be nearly 9 am. At work on models, painting administration quarters and garage, fire station, power house, sergeants bunks. Went over to canteen and bought bottle of ginger beer and a bar of Lux soap for Doris. Went on with models and finished off painting. it was snowy outside and very cold going over to dinner. Had dinner, meat, boiled onions, potatoes, sago. had two helpings of sago. Came back and got ready to go out. Took some models to show Mr Ganton. I got there, Doris was just coming to meet me. I went indoors and helped to get the tea ready, then got Lyn up. Gave Doris her soap and toothbrush. She was pleased with them. Went up to the post office. It was bitterly cold. We cam back and had tea. I helped to wash up and read a story to Lyn. Listened to exploits of Mt Ganton. He showed us his scarf he was making on a frame. Sat by fire and read the Country Mart. Then had supper, sausage and onions. Yarned over fishing, then got ready to go.Lamp came off. Got in 11.20, sat by fire and read a story. Goodnight.

Oh, put Lyn up directly after tea and I read to her and then Bill did. Bill read this evening and I knitted. We had the dining room to ourselves. Supper 9.00 pm, sausages and onions. Went on pay parade, drew £2.00, then back to work till dinner. Had dinner, stew, beans, potatoes and pudding and custard. Bought a bottle of ginger beer, then rang Doris up, said I was coming over. Had letter from Mother, she had a cold. Henry had been down, Bobby was back to school. Dad had a cold and was going fishing. Also Frank Theobald had gone to Dorset. Got ready to go out and cycled over to Rodwell. Met Doris and Lyn, they were pleased to see me. Lyn gave me a straw, I gave her a ride on the bike. Had tea then put Lyn to bed. Mended her car. Read her three little pigs, then sat in front of the fire. Read the Countryman. Mrs Smeaton had my *** to measure by. Had supper and then biked home to camp. Made fires up, had a smoke then in bed.

Got Lyn up at 3.40, dressed myself etc. Got tea then took Lyn to meet Bill. he rang up dinner time and all was ok. Put Lyn to bed and Bill read 3 pigs while I darned his clean socks. Bill read this evening and read bits to me too, and I knitted, finished the skirt and half one front of the jumper. Up to the top gate, tonight just like a 'just engaged' night - happy. Bed now 10.55. G. Night.

Got up about 6.30, washed and dressed, had breakfast. It was fish, so I had my porridge and then toasted some bread. Started on some more models. Painted a church and hostel. Had dinner, meat, swede, potatoes, rice pudding. After that I bought a bar of chocolate. Rang up Doris. She was OK, also Lyn, and arranged to meet them. I carried, on with some more work, drew a rifle lock on the blackboard for Flt Sg Prickard. Drew lines of telephone communications for George Doughty. Got dressed and biked over to Rodwell. I met Doris and Lyn. Lyn was thrilled to see some boys *** ice on the pond. We walked back and had tea. After that we put Lyn to bed. I read three stories to her, then went down in front of fire. Made myself very comfortable, then I held the wool for Doris. She read me her Mother's letter. They were pleased with Lyn's drawings.

Got Lyn up then got tea, and Lyn and I went to the duck's pond to meet Bill. He rang up dinner time and all was OK. he brought some models, church, monument, tank and a barn. Put Lyn to bed and read her Black Sambo and 3 Bears. Bill read and I wrote about Lyn's N.S.P.'s and to Mother, and then I knitted. Supper early 9.10, up to the top with Bill and now to bed a little earlier than usual - 10.10 pm. G. Night.

Up about 6.45 then breakfast. Hard boiled egg and porridge, coffee. Painted a few models then over to the education officer to get him to sign my papers. It was done and I came back again about eleven, then did some more modelling. Had dinner, meat, swede and currant pudding. I rang Doris up, she was ok. In the afternoon I did some painting and then got ready to go out. I met Doris, she said third time lucky. I showed her some of my models, she was pleased. We walked back, Lyn walking on the grass bank. She looked very sweet in her woolen hood and cape. We had tea and put Lyn to bed. I read her some stories and then went into the dining room and made a good fire. I read some stories out of Not at Night, a bit gruesome. After that we had supper. I had a pint of cold milk. It was refreshing. The weather is cold and frosty, freezing practically all day. I got back about half past eleven, sat by fire and had a warm. Good night.

Got up about 7 then had breakfast, bacon and fried bread. Started work on models, painted a few on and made a house. Had dinner, *** and currant pudding. In afternoon took remustering papers to get signed, went to MO after dinner and waited all the afternoon for MO. he came about 5. It was half past when we got examined. We were alright. I did not stop over there for tea but straight back to camp and got one of the lads to make me a piece of toast while I changed. I was soon on the road and arrived about 20 past seven. Lyn was just going to bed so I read her a story and gave her a sweet, then went down and had some tea. I took some little houses to show Doris, she was pleased with them. Had a read by the fire. It was freezing outside, cold bitter wind that went right through one. Had supper and back to camp. Kelly was sitting by fire. Goodnight.

Finished 2..30, knitted till 3, then had a bath, got Lyn up, then Philip, Knitted a little while, weighed some dog biscuit for Kala, got tea and got Lyn and me ready, and we went to meet Bill as soon as Mrs S came in. Stayed out till six but no luck. Had tea, washed up and put Lyn to bed and then Bill came. He'd passed medical for remuster. He rang up dinner time too. Read little to Lyn. Sat round fire together. I got him some tea on a tray and we had coffee. Read with him all the evening in his parlour. Went up to the top with him, bed now 10.50 pm. Tired.
Got up about 7 then had breakfast, bacon and fried bread. Started work on models, painted a few on and made a house. Had dinner, *** and currant pudding. In afternoon took remustering papers to get signed, went to MO after dinner and waited all the afternoon for MO. he came about 5. It was half past when we got examined. We were alright. I did not stop over there for tea but straight back to camp and got one of the lads to make me a piece of toast while I changed. I was soon on the road and arrived about 20 past seven. Lyn was just going to bed so I read her a story and gave her a sweet, then went down and had some tea. I took some little houses to show Doris, she was pleased with them. Had a read by the fire. It was freezing outside, cold bitter wind that went right through one. Had supper and back to camp. Kelly was sitting by fire. Goodnight.

Rodwell. Up usual time and all usual jobs. Lyn ok but mischevious. Finished 2..30, knitted till 3, then had a bath, got Lyn up, then Philip, Knitted a little while, weighed some dog biscuit for Kala, got tea and got Lyn and me ready, and we went to meet Bill as soon as Mrs S came in. Stayed out till six but no luck. Had tea, washed up and put Lyn to bed and then Bill came. He'd passed medical for remuster. He rang up dinner time too. Read little to Lyn. Sat round fire together. I got him some tea on a tray and we had coffee. Read with him all the evening in his parlour. Went up to the top with him, bed now 10.50 pm. Tired.

Monday 16th February
Bill.
Got up 7.40, dressed and shaved. Went to breakfast, had porridge with coffee, then got ready for work. Cut out a *** gun trypod and houses. Put gable on one. Made a hay stack. It was cold and frosty. Went to dinner, minced up meat and *** pudding with custard. After dinner, had a go at my lighter - wheel was clogged up. Did some more work on my houses, painted the roofs red and blacked in for tiles. It looked ok, I felt very pleased with them. Worked till 4 then went to tea, pilchards and jam. After that I made my bed. Was going out by 5 but stand by had started so save any bother I stopped in, much to my regret. Went to the lecture and took gun to bits. Then to supper and then had cheese on toast with a lump of cheese. I had two helpings. Came back to hut and met Fa**, he said he would play a game of draughts. Then I had a warm by fire. Rang up Doris. She had been down the road to meet me. Lyn was anxious about her sweet, she thought I might eat it. Went back and got to bed early. Goodnight.

Then we went to meet Bill, stayed out till six, Lyn thoroughly enjoyed herself but he didn't come. Put her to bed and then knitted, finished 1 half of Lyn's skirt. Bill rang up, he was quite alright but stayed in as a stand by. Going to get his medical' and education officer's signatures tomorrow for remuster. So glad he's all right, I was worried. Bed now 10.40 pm.

Sunday 15th February
Bill
Got up 8.30, it was nice to be in bed. I got up and dressed, washed, and then went down to breakfast. It smelt good from the landing. I sat down to porridge and egg and bacon, very nice too. After then, we washed up and I helped Kidlet to make the beds, then took some ideas from Jill's doll house. After then, I helped to peel the potatoes, then had a read. Waited till Mrs Smeaton and children came back from Church and then all of us went for a walk round the farm. It was frosty but lovely and sunny. The sun was warm. Jess came down with us, she put up a rabbit, a pity I had no gun. We walked back and got in about one. Had dinner, a very nice piece of roast beef, potatoes, Yorkshire pudding and a large boiled onion. Blancmange and prunes and tarts. After dinner I helped with the washing up then put Lyn to bed and had a read and a rest, then laid the tea and had it early. Put Lyn to bed and read her three stories.After that I sat in the chair by a nice log fire and read a book. After that, supper, and listened to Mr Churchill's speech and Singapore loss. Got ready to go back, grateful for a nice time. Got back about 10 to 11 and Butch had made my bed. Goodnight.

Did usual Sunday jobs together then Bill read and I knitted and wrote to Mother while they were at Church, then us three went for a walk over the fields before dinner. Sitting round the fire knitting and reading. I do wish Bill hadn't got to go back tonight. I'm needy, I want him all the time!! Churchill spoke 9.00 pm. Depressing. Singapore has fallen. Feel miserable now Bill has gone. Bed now 10.05 pm.

Saturday 14th February
Bill
Got up about 1/4 past seven, went to breakfast, had boiled cod. I refrained from any such breakfast. Made two pieces of toast and had two cups of coffee, then went on with the painting of the models. Finished them off and made a leg for a tripod for Laye's gun, then went to dinner, had mutton stew and bread pudding and custard, then sat by fire and read paper. Got ready to go out, put things away, got my pass and scooted out of the gate. Had a warm and then went up to the village with Doris and Lyn. She bought me some plasters, tobacco and marzipan. We walked slowly back and then had tea. We put Lyn to bed and read her a story, then helped to wash up and sat by fire. Showed Doris my tank, she thought it was very good. Finished off book and had supper. It was very frosty and cold. Went to bed, glad I did not have to bike home. It was nice to get in bed after two cups of cocoa. We talked of various things then. Good night.

Sat in the dining room for a little while then got Lyn and went up to the shop. Got some marzipan. Put Lyn to bed, and stories Moocow and James! Sat around the fire, knitted and Bill read, very content for Bill is staying the night - great! Laid breakfast things, S's off to bed before ten so we're off too, 10.00 pm. Lyn will be surprised to wake up in the morning and find her Daddy here. She took him for a nice walk while I was in the shop today and I got her some sweets - 6 all for herself.

Friday 13th February

Got up 7.10, had breakfast of boiled egg and I made some toast. Read about Scharnhorst getting away. I did not feel enthused over the morning news. Started work and finished painting off one batch. Squd L Fish had a look at them and asked if there were enough to start building up. I carried on painting tanks. I had dinner, meat, greens, potatoes and currant pudding and custard. Sat by fire and had a warm, then *** on small models again, painting till 4 o'clock, then got ready to go out. Also bought my soap ration. Cycled over to Hillmarton and met Doris and Lyn. They were very pleased and Lyn had a big hug for me. We walked slowly back. Doris had a letter from Mother saying they would be pleased to have the goat. We had tea and then put Lyn to bed. Mr Smeaton had been threshing. Lyn accepted no story as she had been naughty. She had a lovely colour. I sat by fire and finished Moonraking. Enjoyed it very much. Then had supper and Doris walked up to the gate with me and I hope to see her tomorrow. I got in about quarter past eleven. Good night.

Got the tea all ready and ourselves dressed and as soon as Mrs S came back, took Lyn and Kala to meet Bill. Put Lyn to bed, no story as she was naughty when I put her to be after dinner. Sat round the fire with Bill. Knitted, finished my sock and Bill read. Went up to the top gate with him. Nice to think he will be here again tomorrow. bed now 10..45 pm, so Good Night.

Up at 7.15, had bacon and sausage for breakfast and porridge, then got ready for work. I did some more models and painted some of them, also fixed a few up. Had a cup of tea for lunch and then on again. I went to dinner, meat, swedes and potatoes, rice pudding. Had a phone to Kidlet, they were all well. Lyn as full of beans. I carried on again. Got some *** to thin down my paint and got on very well. Had tea and cake and roll. Did some more work after tea till too dark, then played a game of darts with Kelly. I won two, he also won two. I made up my bed. I felt very tired. Went to supper, it was tinned herring.I had some cocoa but nothing to eat. It was very dark and cold out. I played a few more games of darts then rang up Doris, she was well, also Lyn was tip top full of beans. I feel very pleased that she is so well. I went back and got into bed early and read a story. Stayed awake till about half past ten then dropped off to sleep.

Mrs S went to the village this afternoon so I had to get Philip up again and look after him. Knitted all the afternoon. No walk today. Lyn very well so terribly mischevious. Knitted this evening and wrote to D Neals about Lyn's sandals as sample sent today was too small. Heard from Mum today - ok. Bill rang up dinner time and this evening - busy painting his models today. Supper and now bed 10.10 and very ready for it. G. Night.

Went to dinner, had meat, turnips and potatoes and currant pudding with custard, then back to hut after buying a bar of Kit Kat and a pad for Doris. Started work and then in the afternoon did a drawing on blackboard of a grenade and discharger cup for Fl Sg Prickard to lecture to the goons. Watched demonstration on asault course then got ready to go out. Cycled over to Rodwell. Doris was going back along the road, given me up. Lyn was walking along the grass, she was ever so sweet. Doris told me Bill got kicked in the face by a cow. Had tea and then put Lyn to bed, read her two stories. She was very *** and gave me some of her crisps. She had been saving them for me, the dear little mite. She also asked how my finger was. I had Mr Smeaton's book and read some more horror stories. They were ***, I enjoyed them very much. Had supper and biked home. Got in about half past eleven and Kilgour was there. I had some cocoa and chatted to Kelly, then to bed.

Up at 7 and then cleaned up.Went to breakfast, bacon, porridge. Started work, made some more tanks, fitted up a wireless mast. Had a warm during break time, then carried on again till dinner. Had some dinner and it was roast meat and swede, potatoes, and currant pudding with custard. Bought a packet of lemsips for Doris, then back. Came back to hut, read book and then went on with the job. Made a lorry and monument and did several other little things and packed up about ten past four. Went over to see what they had for tea, then had *** and cream and jam sandwich. I *** mine. Got ready to go out and put cape on bike. It had been fine practically all day but one never knows. I got to Rodwell. Doris met me, was better and she looked better too. I had tea and washed up, put Lyn to bed and read her a story, 3 Bears and Chicken Licken. Went down and sat by fire and read Mr Smeaton's Book of Horrors, then we had supper and I got ready to go out and asked Mr and Mrs Smeaton if I could stop on Saturday. They kindly let me. I got back about half past eleven. Heard news about the ** paying married mans allowances by *** half.

Bill is going to try for a sleeping out pass this weekend. Pouring with rain when I went up to the top with him. How I wish he hadn't got that awful ride - one night less though. bed now and I feel sicky tired - 11.11 pm.

Got up about ten to seven, had a shave, cold water turned, pump broken. Had breakfast, bacon and sausage. I did not enjoy it but the porridge wasn't too bad. Started work on huts. Made a few, also a wireless mast. Watched demonstration by our lads assault course to show ***, then had dinner. Beans ** and spuds, ground rice.Had a ginger beer and rang up Kidlet. She still had her cold, but Lyn was alright,but naughty. Went over to hut and had a warm. After dinner, started work again. Made some more models of tanks, they were ok. I worked till it was too dark, then cut my finger. Had knife and chisels *** in the hanger. Went to tea, had meat, tinned and cream and jam sandwich.Came back to hut, had a smoke and a yarn, and then put tools away and went to supper. Had Welsh Rarebit, then came back to hut, wrote up some of this diary and sat by fire.The hut is being used as a guard hut. Two LAC posted here from *** and I am going over to get a drink. No water in taps. Rang up Doris and she still had a slight cold. Lyn was alright but naughty. Came back and got book to read, then made ready to get in bed. Had a read and then got down for a sleep. Goodnight.

Rodwell. Up usual time and usual day. Lyn very mischievous today - that is quite well. Did a bit of Lyn's blanket this afternoon, then got Philip and Lyn up and did some of my sock till tea time. Got Lyn to bed by 6.45 and few nursery rhymes, then finished her blanket. Darned 2 pairs of my socks, then did some more sock. Bill rang up at dinner time, quite OK and he rang up again this evening and we had a nice little chat. I've got a beastly cold and so am going to try Sir Charlie's cure, hope it will be successful. Bed now 10.30 pm.

Had Welsh Rarebit, then came back to hut, wrote up some of this diary and sat by fire.The hut is being used as a guard hut. Two LAC posted here from *** and I am going over to get a drink. No water in taps. Rang up Doris and she still had a slight cold. Lyn was alright but naughty. Came back and got book to read, then made ready to get in bed. Had a read and then got down for a sleep. Rodwell. Up usual time and usual day. Lyn very mischievous today - that is quite well. Did a bit of Lyn's blanket this afternoon, then got Philip and Lyn up and did some of my sock till tea time. Got Lyn to bed by 6.45 and few nursery rhymes, then finished her blanket. Darned 2 pairs of my socks, then did some more sock. Bill rang up at dinner time, quite OK and he rang up again this evening and we had a nice little chat. I've got a beastly cold and so am going to try Sir Charlie's cure, hope it will be successful. Bed now 10.30 pm.

Sunday 8th February
Bill
Got up at ten to eight and hurried over to breakfast. Had a faggot of some mysterious make and coffee, then cleaned up, shaved and cleaned up buttons. Then did some more work, made a few more models after, then had a warm by the fire. Cleaned up my pipe and had a smoke. Went to dinner, had meat, greens, spuds, prunes and custard. Got cycle ready, then cycled over to Hillmarton. Doris came out to the yard very pleased I had come over. We had a rest then got Lyn up and went for a nice long walk. It was lovely and bright. The sun was out all the time. We had quite a long walk and chatted on various subjects. We got back to tea and then put Lyn to bed. We sat by the fire. Doris had a bad cold in the head, poor old kid. She wasn't too comfortable. I read some more of Moonraking and thoroughly enjoyed it. Also I sat and smoked by the fire and felt very comfortable and warm. It was nice to sit in the old chair and rest. We had supper, baked onions, they were lovely. I enjoyed them for a change. I helped to wash up and then got ready to go back.I would not let Kidlet come out with me as her cold was worse. I walked up the drive and put my lights on so that if she looked out of the window she would see me. I got back to the guard room 11.15 and then had a warm by the fire and a smoke. Talked with Kelly on shooting and birds and their habits.Got in to bed and settled down to sleep. Goodnight.

Rodwell. Up 8.45 and got Lyn up at the same time. After breakfast, washed up, did potatoes, then wrote to Mother, and did all my ironing. Bill arrived at 2.45 so we went to bed!!! Got up about four with Lyn, laid tea, then went for a long walk up the Bushton Road and got back 5.45. Had tea, put Lyn to bed, she didn't get a story as she disobeyed me when I told her to go into the bedroom. We sat round the fire, got a fiendish cold and was very glad of Bill's parlour. Had roast onions for supper. BIll wouldn't let me go out with me so - to bed - 10.30 pm.

Saturday 7th February
Bill
Up at 6.30, cleaned up and had breakfast, salt rancid bacon and coffee. Started on models. Went down to Flt Lt Ball, they were ok, and have to make guns, masts, chimney stacks. Had to measure for frame. Carried on with work till 12.15 then went to dinner. Had meat, greens, potatoes, sultana pudding with custard. Went and did some more work then got dressed and made bed ready for tonight. Cycle over to Rodwell. It was a bitterly cold east wind, snowing slightly. Doris was then going back, she had been up the road to meet me. She was pleased to see me. I went in and we got Lyn up. She was well. I dressed her while Doris got tea tray ready. We were going up to the village, Doris had left her pay book up there. We were in a hurry as Mrs Smeaton was showing films on the screen. Doris found her book. It was at the post office. We had some toffees and a bar of Kit Kat. Kidlet gave me an ounce of Airmens tobacco and 40 Players. Had tea, honey, jam, scones, buns and ginger bread. After tea, helped to wash up, then saw films. Thoroughly enjoyed them. Put Lyn to bed, read her one story as it was so cold. Went down and sat by fire. Had a good warm, then had supper. Gave Lyn her 16/-. Doris bought certificate. Pickled onions and cheese for supper. It was very cold. I biked home.Not too bad. Got back to camp twenty past eleven. Sat by fire and a smoke and a warm, then got in to bed. it was cold, but soon got warm. Good night.

Bill bought Lyn a certificate with his L.A.C. pay. Had tea, Sylvia and Jasnet Heal to tea. Mrs S showed us some of her films afterwards til 7.15. Put Lyn to bed with short story, round the fire by 8.00 pm. Knitted. Up to the top with Bill. I've got the hot water bottle tonight as I forgot to give it to Lyn - treat! I got Lyn another N.S.C. with money she had. 10.50 pm now so Good Night.

Up 6.45, washed, dressed, made bed, cleaned buttons, rifle. Went to breakfast, had good home cured bacon and fried bread, coffee. I made a piece of toast and put Beetox on. I twas very nice. I put my tools and wood in drying room and started work. Half past ten, pay parade. Drew £2.10.0. 16/- shillings back pay. It will be Lyn's. Came back and wrote up some of this diary. Carried on with job. Went down to sketch Rapier Hanger. Went over to office and consulted P/O Mostermon and ** Ball. Made models smaller, then took them down again for alterations. Had dinner. Corned beef, greens and potatoes, sultana pudding with custard. Carried on with work and finished off some more models. Went to tea and had meat minced with vegetables, and cake. Toasted a pieces and had some Beetox on it. Played Kelly with draughts, won odd games, then went to supper. Had a pie and got some ginger beer. Sat round fire. Watched the lads playing poker. Saw kitty go 40/- - 27/- and *** *** *** ones. The rang up Doris. Lyn was all right but not too good tempered, and she had written to my Mother. Came back and scrubbed gum boots and watched card players. Toasted some more bread and got ready for bed and then put things away. Good night.

Got cleared by 2.00 and did a large packet of washing for us three. Got Lyn up and took her for a walk just round the garden etc. Wrote to Mrs Lucock this evening and knitted. Onions and white sauce for supper. Bill rang up 8.45. All right and just going to bed. Another day nearer us going home for good together. I HATE other people's houses. Bed now 10.45 pm.

Got up about 6.45, washed and shaved. It was snowing slightly and had been all night. Very cold wind from the north. Had breakfast, egg on toast. On parade, then bayonette drill and disarming. 10.30 break, went over to office to see P/O Mostermon. he wasn't there so went back after break. Saw Flt Lt Ball and Sq Ld Fish. They wanted me to make models for a sand tray of the drome. P/O Mostermon went with me to get some wood. Found some and then borrowed tools from George Daughty, two chisels and a plane. Borrowed a saw over the armoury then started work. Had dinner, meat, greens and currant pudding with custard. Made a hanger in the afternoon. Rang up Doris. Lyn had been in bed with a bad head. Poor Lyn. Got dressed ready to go out. Had a cup of tea first, then cycled over to Hillmarton. It was freezing. Saw Doris and Lyn, she was up to tea. She hadn't much colour but feeling better. I had tea then put Lyn to bed and read Three Bears and Chicken Licken. Went down and helped to wash up. Sat by fire and drew ducks on Lyn's blanket. Had supper, spam sandwiches. Cycled back to camp. It was freezing and dark. Got back 11.20. Changed clothes on ***. Got in bed. Good night. Doris bought me Beetox.

Bill read 2 stories and me while he changed. Gave her 1/2 aspirin. Wrote to Mum and Mrs Thrower. Bill drew ducks on Lyn's blankets and I started embroidering them. Up to the top gate with him, bed now 10.45. G. Night.

Got up at 7 am, dressed and cleaned up, then went to breakfast. Boiled cod and porridge. Toasted some bread then on parade. Got praised for clean rifle, then detailed to report to LAC Hamilton. I sent men round to get working and booked it. Took washing and exchanges over to Yatesbury in ***. Had dinner, took boats over and tried to get exchange but no voucher so had to leave it as Waaf parade on. Came back and went to tea. Had beans on toast, cake and currant bread. Got changed and cycled over to Hillmarton. Rang up Doris at 1 o'clock. Saw Squ Ld Fish about remustering. He said he would put it through. Went out with Mr Smeaton to see if we could shoot some ducks but they were not there. Read to Lyn and then read papers and Kidlet read to me out of Mum's letter. She had been queer. Sat and read book, then had supper, cycled back to camp. It was very cold. Got back 11.10, cleaned up for morning. Got in bed. God night.

Knitted at my sock, got Philip (Mrs S out) and Lyn up (Lyn hadn't been asleep) and they played ever so well together all the afternoon. Jill upset Lyn as soon as she came in as per. Bill rang up dinner time and arrived unexpectedly at 6 pm. It was so nice to see him. We put Lyn to bed and Bill read 3 Bears then sat round the fire. Bill saw Fish today and he signed Bill's remustering and sent it through. Knitted all the evening and talked. Went to top gate, now 10.45 - bed.

Got up 6.50, washed and shaved.It was snowing and the paths were very slippery. Started the day without collars, very cold round the neck. Went on blue *** but could not get hat changed. Came back and went down hanger then joined class on Vickers gun for half hour. Duty Cpl told me I was excused guards because I was going to *** stoppage chart. Had dinner meat, greens and potato, currant pudding and custard. Got ready for bath parade over Yatesbury, then had bath. Came back, dismissed for tea. Had currant bread and *** jam. Bottom fell out of mug so had to borrow mug. Came back, cleaned up locker, took socks and pants for exchange, then went over to rec room.Played draughts with Kelly.Played three games, won two. Then attended lecture, dismantled feed block. Went through *** ***. Went to supper. It was stew. Got two slices of currant bread. Bought a bottle of Raspberry fizz and toasted my bread. Read paper and generally messed about. 1.00 rang Doris up, all OK. Am ringing her up half past eight. Played draughts with Kelly, beat him a few games, then made bed and got in early. Read paper and then went to sleep.

Bassett camp to 'George and Margaret'. Rather lonely as Bill C. in bed. Read and finished Random Harvest. Bill rang up dinner time and 9.00pm. Lovely to hear his voice tonight as it it's lonely. Monday 2nd February

Got up 7.50 and went over to get my Irons and mug. Could not find key. Hunted in guard *** so had to borrow mug. Luckily I had knife and fork in my pocket. Had porridge and bacon with sausage. Too late to have a wash, so took blankets back and went on to post at 9.00. Cleaned guns which were wet, so took a long time. Came off 11.00 so washed, shaved and polished up, then to dinner. Minced meat, *** and potatoes, rice with currants in. Back to guard hut so read by fire and then dismissed guard. Packed up. Back drew ***. and hopped on cycle. Met Kidlet top of drive with Kala. Sat by fire then got Lyn up. Went up to village. Doris gave me ounce of *** tobacco, also ** and two twenty Players. Then back, Lyn walked most of the way. Got back, had tea, put Lyn to bed and read Moon Raking. Wrote up some of this diary, listened to play on radio. Lovely fire going, nice and warm, cold and windy outside. Guns going somewhere. Had supper, beans on toast, then cycled home to camp. Got in 11.20. Put things away and as I thought Kelly was sitting in front of fire the lads were back from leave. Goodnight.

He had a narrow shave about being posted abroad yesterday. I do hope he never has to go. Went up to the shop for usuals, got back and had late tea on our own. Put Lyn to bed and Bill read Chicken Licken and 3 Bears to her. Sat round the fire together. Bill read and I read and knitted. Happy. My 2 pairs of shoes came from D. Neals. Very nice indeed. Got up early in the morning and made fire up, then put over coat on bed and snuggled down. Woke up and got up ten past eight. Washed, shaved and went to breakfast. Porridge was good bu the bacon was rancid so could not eat it. Made a piece of toast and out on parade 9.15 for snow clearing. It was raining like the devil so had capes and gum boots on. Finished early and came in. Read paper and cleaned rifle and kit. Went to dinner, had stewed meat, beans and sago and dried apples. Phoned up Kidlet. She was well, also Lyn. Wanted ten more men for overseas, so many LAC, AC1, AC2, not very healthy. Came back and had a smoke. Got ready to go on guard parade on 7 post. It is raining. I won the toss so went on first. Sat inside, read paper. Relieved 3 o'clock. Came up to guard hut. Made up fire and got my book to read. Flt Sg *** said not *** too tonight. Had tea, meat, cake. Went down to post, took a pail and got water out of pumps. Took guns in.Came back to hut. Look bit * *** drawings of grenades and had the gen about them. Filled pail up and I am going to supper. Had tinned herring in tomato sauce then back to hut. Made up bed. Watched the lads playing Brag and read a bit out of the papers. Then took off collar and coats and popped in bed. Goodnight.

Up 8.45 am and got Lyn up at the same time. Washed up, made beds and did potatoes. They all went to church. Wrote to Mother, darned my tennis socks, gave Lyn her dinner and put her to bed. Bill rang up, quite ok on No. 7 post. Good, he will get a night in bed. Went to bed this afternoon and read 'Random Harvest' but fell asleep until 3.45. Got Lyn and read to her till tea time. Read her 2 full length stories in bed. 'Chicken Licken' and 'Three Bears'. She enjoyed them. Mended Bill's socks, did a bit of Lyn's vest, then started tennis socks for me in Bill's A.7. wool. bath and then bed 9.45.
Got up early in the morning and made fire up, then put over coat on bed and snuggled down. Woke up and got up ten past eight. Washed, shaved and went to breakfast. Porridge was good bu the bacon was rancid so could not eat it. Made a piece of toast and out on parade 9.15 for snow clearing. It was raining like the devil so had capes and gum boots on. Finished early and came in. Read paper and cleaned rifle and kit. Went to dinner, had stewed meat, beans and sago and dried apples. Phoned up Kidlet. She was well, also Lyn. Wanted ten more men for overseas, so many LAC, AC1, AC2, not very healthy. Came back and had a smoke. Got ready to go on guard parade on 7 post. It is raining. I won the toss so went on first. Sat inside, read paper. Relieved 3 o'clock. Came up to guard hut. Made up fire and got my book to read. Flt Sg *** said not *** too tonight. Had tea, meat, cake. Went down to post, took a pail and got water out of pumps. Took guns in.Came back to hut. Look bit * *** drawings of grenades and had the gen about them. Filled pail up and I am going to supper. Had tinned herring in tomato sauce then back to hut. Made up bed. Watched the lads playing Brag and read a bit out of the papers. Then took off collar and coats and popped in bed. Goodnight.

Up 8.45 am and got Lyn up at the same time. Washed up, made beds and did potatoes. They all went to church. Wrote to Mother, darned my tennis socks, gave Lyn her dinner and put her to bed. Bill rang up, quite ok on No. 7 post. Good, he will get a night in bed. Went to bed this afternoon and read 'Random Harvest' but fell asleep until 3.45. Got Lyn and read to her till tea time. Read her 2 full length stories in bed. 'Chicken Licken' and 'Three Bears'. She enjoyed them.
